Dowling Takes Two From Molloy To Claim ECC Title

Brookhaven, N.Y. - The Dowling College Softball team defeated the Molloy College Lions 1-0 and 3-0 to claim the ECC Championship crown.

Neither offenses could get off the ground against the stifling starting pitching of Megan Butterworth and Jessie Stavola (Montauk, NY) until the top of the fourth inning.  Jeana Frey reached on an infield single. Haley Calderwood followed with a double to center field, but Frey would be gunned out at home keeping the score tied at 0-0.

The Golden Lions bats would muster the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Senior outfielder Kristina DeMeo (Bayshore, NY) laid down a bunt that took the Lions off-guard as she reached safely with an infield hit.  Up next, Kristen Weeks (Middle Island, NY) stroked a ball up the middle.  Deana Tortorici (Levittown, NY) made the ultimate sacrifice for the team as she bunted to push DeMeo 60 feet from home.  Krystil Hofmann (Glendale, NY) entered the game for the designated player and found a hole in Molloy's defense in the Bermuda triangle behind second base as the Lion's centerfielder, short stop and second base all converged, but none were able to secure the out.  Hofmann hustling out of the box earned herself a double on the play.

Stavola recorded the last six outs consecutively securing her 18th win of the season and second of the ECC playoffs.  She worked all 7 innings and only allowed 4 hits while striking out 6.  Stephanie Tarango (Fontana, CA), Kristina DeMeo, Kristen Weeks and Krystil Hofmann each had one hit.

In the second game Dowling was forced to play as the visitors on their own field after being defeated in a coin toss.  In the ECC Playoff final the Golden Lions sent Junior Felicia Mendoza (Bloomington, CA) to the mound.  Molloy continued the same way they ended the first game with Kelly Jensen in the circle.

Molloy had their best chance of the game in the bottom of the first inning.  Megan Butterworth lined an 0-2 pitch up the middle to start the frame.  Jeana Frey would reach on a Golden Lions fielding miscue.  After a ground out moved the runs up a base and a Haley Calderwood walk, loaded the bases with only one out.  Mendoza showed great execution and pose as she was able to induce a strikeout looking and a ground out to short stop to evade danger.

The Golden Lions only managed one hit through the first 3 innings.  However in the top of the fourth Jessica Roque (Warren Grove, NJ) used her keen batting eye and drew a lead-off walk.  Jensen looked to be out of danger as she recorded back to back fly outs of the Golden Lions three and four batters, but Senior Kristina DeMeo had other ideas as she ripped a double down the left field line.  Up stepped Kristen Weeks with two outs and two on.  She got a pitch up in the zone that she could handle and deposited it over the left field fence for her fifth home run of the season giving Dowling a 3-0 lead.  Molloy would only manage a walk and one hit over the next three innings as Mendoza picked up her 13th, second of the tournament, of the season.

Lisa Compitello (Bohemia, NY), Jessica Roque, Kristina DeMeo and Kristen Weeks all had one hit.  Mendoza worked 7 innings while only allowing 2 hits and striking out 7.
