Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy
College softball team advanced to the East Coast Conference
Championship game with a 4-1 victory over Dowling College in the
winners bracket on Friday (Apr. 27) morning, improving its record
to 41-10 overall in 2012. The Lions will now compete for their
third-straight ECC Crown on Saturday (Apr. 28) against Dowling at
12 p.m. at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre,
Junior Kelley Jansen (Long Beach, N.Y.) took to the circle for the Lions. In a full seven innings, she struck out ten batters while allowing just one run to secure the crucial victory. She started the game off strong, striking out the first three batters that she faced.
Molloy struck first in the bottom of the first. Senior Carla Campagna (Floral Park, N.Y.) smacked a solo homerun to left center, handing her side a 1-0 lead early in the game. That homer was her 10th of the year.
Dowling answered right back in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, senior Krystil Hofmann (Glendale, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, sending classmate Emily Slack (East Islip, N.Y.) home to tie the game.
The Lions took the lead back in their half of the second off a lead-off homerun from sophomore Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
The hosts added another run in the third inning. Junior Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) started it off with a double to left field. Classmate Megan Butterworth (Bellmore, N.Y.) followed that up with a single to left field that moved Frey to third. Campagna was then able to connect for a sacrifice fly to left field, pushing Frey across home plate for a 3-1 lead.
The game was scoreless for the next two-plus innings, until Molloy added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Haley Calderwood (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) connected for a solo shot to centerfield, bringing the Lions’ lead to 4-1 for the eventual final score.
In all, Calderwood and Butterworth led the Lions with 2-for-3 performances at the plate. Calderwood also scored a run and drove in one RBI. Jansen tossed a two-hitter, with 10 strikeouts and one run against her.
The Lions will face off against Dowling again on Friday for the ECC Championship. Molloy could clinch the title with a win in the first game, however a loss would result in a second game, with the winner earning the crown. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
