Five Queens Student-Athletes Participate in "College Dream Day" at Local Elementary School
Consistent with the NCAA Division II attribute of
“Service,” five student-athletes from Queens College
recently participated (April 1) in “College Dream Day”
at the Adam Clayton Powell Elementary School in Harlem.
As part of the day, Knights student-athletes, Brian Buckmire
(soccer/track and field), Lamonte Lans (basketball), Jovanna
Pavlovic (volleyball), Nicole Orsino (swimming and diving) and
Brittany Schuler (swimming and diving) spoke to the elementary
school students about going to college, participating in college
athletics, and following dreams – among other topics. The QC
student-athletes took time out following the assembly to play
sports with the kids in the Adam Clayton Powell gymnasium, as
well.
"It was motivating and heart warming," said Schuler of the visit.
"(The students) were so grateful for us coming, yet I cannot begin
to explain how appreciative I am for the experience. If I could
(visit) every Friday I would."
"As an athlete, the odds of winning are always 50/50 when you step
on the field. To see these kids fight against all odds to get into
college was inspiring," added Buckmire. "College should not be a
dream for them, but a reality, with that attitude."
Throughout the academic year, the Queens College department of
athletics – including its staff, coaches and student-athletes
– participates in community service and community engagement
activities throughout the tri-state area.
