Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Mercy College athletic department is the recipient of the 2010 East Coast Conference Community Service Award for their hosting and participation in the “Haunting of Sleepy Hollow”. This award is presented an the institution in recognition of an outstanding community service program held during the academic year.
Mercy College student-athletes and staff served as actors, retailers, set crew and security as hundreds of regional residents navigated the haunted Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in October. The three night event included a walking ghost tour of the Cemetery while listening to the retelling of the American Classic the Legend of Sleeping Hollow. Mercy also assisted vendors and directed the masses at a street fair that was held in conjunction with the final night. In addition to helping with this important community event, funds of over $5,500 were raised and donated to Make-A-Wish.
The Mavericks were recognized at the East Coast Conference Awards Dinner on June 9.
