Men's Lacrosse Earns First Win Of 2008 Against #6 Molloy, 6-5

NORTH ANDOVER, MA - The Merrimack College men's lacrosse team, ranked sixth in the latest Lax News national poll, earned a win in its first game of the 2008 season, 6-5, against Molloy College on Sunday afternoon. Junior Greg Rogowski ( Cohoes, NY) netted four goals for the Warriors, who earned first year head coach Mike Morgan his first collegiate victory.

Senior Thomas Fennell (Ridgefield, CT) opened the scoring for Merrimack, tallying a goal with the team up a man, just under six minutes into the game. Senior Kevin Meekins (Levittown, NY) evened the score for the Lions with nine seconds remaining in the opening quarter, and was followed up by two more unanswered goals, putting the Warriors down 3-1, late in the first half. Rogowski scored his first goal of the contest with 3:05 remaining in the second quarter, and after a goal by junior Jeffrey Flandina (West Islip, NY), Merrimack entered the intermission down 4-2.

Rogowski scored a pair of goals, just two minutes apart, to tie the score at four, and Fennell added another with 1:15 left in the third quarter to put the Warriors up 5-4. Just 48 seconds into the fourth quarter, freshman Ryan Bohlert (East Patchogue, NY) knotted the score at five, but Rogowski put home the game winner with 7:03 remaining in the game to clinch the victory.

With four points on the day, Rogowski now stands 12 points shy of the all-time program record, set by Ryan Savage in 2000.

Each team converted a pair of extra man opportunities, and Merrimack committed 19 turnovers, to Molloy's 27. Sophomore Corey Spinale (Revere, MA) stopped 14 shots in earning his first win in a Warrior uniform, including four in the final quarter.

Merrimack, ranked sixth in this week's Laxnews.com national poll, next plays at Assumption on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
