Baden Players of the Week
Kevin Reese, Dowling - Went 5-7 (.714) with two RBI and produced a big late inning hit to plate the go ahead runs in a 10-4 victory over Felician.
Jimmy Rivas, New Haven (Jr., OF, Toa Baja, PR / Monroe CC) - Rivas hit .800 (4-for-5) with a double in two seven-inning games at No. 15 West Chester last weekend. He slugged 1.000 and walked once for an .833 on-base percentage, and also stole one base.
Baden Pitcher and Rookie of the Week
Anthony DiCarlo, Mercy (Fr., Red Hook, N.Y. / Red Hook HS) - Allowed one hit and struck out six in eight innings of a 5-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas. Allowed an infield single by the first batter he faced and faced just two batters over the minimum.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In this week's NCBWA Northeast Regional Poll, Adelphi stands No. 2, Dowling is No. 4, and Bridgeport is tied with Stonehill at No. 8. C.W. Post, Molloy and Saint Thomas Aquinas are receiving votes.
Dowling: Dowling had a 1-1 week in non-conference action, defeating Felician 10-4 and dropping a close pitcher's duel to Dominican 1-3. Kevin Reese and Ralph Tufano led the way, Reese collected 5 hits (.714) and 2 RBI's during the span while Tufano chipped in with 3 hits and 3 RBI's. The Golden Lions return to the field Wednesday, March 12 as they travel to Bloomfield before leaving for Boca Raton, FL for a full slate of regional games.
Molloy: Last week, the Lions went 2-1 for the week with a 10-1 victory and a 10-5 victory over Wilmington and a 12-8 loss to St. Rose. Joseph Menendez led the Lions as he went 8-12 (.667 average) from the plate with three doubles and eight RBI. Brian Powers and Steven DeJesus picked up wins for the Lions, while Michael Veccione took the loss.
Mercy: The Mavericks played once last week, posting a 5-0 shutout of St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL, to improve their overall record to 3-5. Freshman right-hander Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY) went the first eight innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters as he improved to 2-0 on the year. Junior outfielder Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and junior second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) also drove in a pair. DiCarlo has allowed just 11 hits in 20.2 innings this year, posting a 2.18 ERA. Freshman right-hander Alex Rodriguez (Miami, FL) closed out the win versus the Spartans. He has appeared in seven of Mercy's eight games, allowing just one earned run in seven innings while fanning six. Freshman Steve Campbell (Staten Island, NY) leads the offense with a .400 batting average (8-for-20), with Pannullo right behind him at .308 (8-for-26). The Mavericks continue their Florida trip on Tuesday with another contest versus St. Thomas Aquinas, followed by a doubleheader at Southeastern on Wednesday and another twin-bill versus Southern Connecticut State on Friday.
C.W. Post: The Pioneers endured a tough trip in Florida with a 2-7 overall record but responded this week with a doubleheader sweep of UMass Lowell on Mar. 9. Offensively, the team is hitting .320 and has outhit its opponents, 116-92. C.W. Post will have a busy week at home, hosting four teams for a six-game home stand.
Adelphi: Adelphi picked up their first two wins of the year, topping Dominican and Franklin Pierce. The Panthers posted an ERA of 0.95, and held their opponents to a .148 batting average. Junior Bill Melillo helped the Panthers to a 2-0 week, going 3-7 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. He also drew a walk, posting an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging percentage of .429. Junior Bobby Lanigan started Adelphi's game against #4 Franklin Pierce, throwing seven innings, allowing three hits, one run and striking out nine. He held the Ravens to a batting average of .136.
Bridgeport: The Purple Knights will open their 2008 season at Rollins College on Wednesday, March 12th. On their Florida trip, Bridgeport will face Rollins, Valdosta State, Bentley College (two games, and the team will play a doubleheader versus Davis and Elkins.
