Baden Player of the Week
Mike Ferrara, Bridgeport (Jr., 1B/DH, Tabernacle, N.J. / Burlington CC) - Hit .636 (7-11) in a three game set with C.W. Post, chipping in three RBI and a home run. In a 7-6 win, went 3 for 4 (HR, 2 RBI). In an DH opening game loss, he went 2 for 4 (RBI) and went 2 for 3 setting up the GW run in game two with a one-out single in the bottom of the 7th.
Baden Pitchers of the Week
Riley Shuckerow, Bridgeport (Jr., P, Milford, CT / CCRI) - Hurled a CG win as a starter and grabbed a save in two appearances against C.W. Post. In a 7-6 road win, picked up the save allowing one unearned run in the ninth. In a 2-1 win, allowed one run (1st inning) on seven hits (7 IP), striking out four.
Brian Honeyman, Queens (Sr., P, Flushing, N.Y. / Molloy) - Picked up the save in game one and was the winner in game two of a DH sweep of Dowling. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to seal a 4-2, come-from-behind win in the opener. In game 2, he picked up a CG victory (7 IP), scattering four hits and striking out seven with eight strikeouts.
Baden Rookie of the Week
Tom Rombilus, New Haven (Fr., 3B, Monroe,
Conn. / Masuk H.S.) - Hit .389 (7-18) last week, scoring a
team-high six runs while driving in two. He had a double and
a triple and walked four times for a .500 on-base percentage and
stole a base.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In this week's NCBWA Northeast Regional Poll, Adelphi remains No. 3, Dowling drops three spots to No. 8, Molloy moves up one spot to No. 9 and Bridgeport is receiving votes.
Adelphi: Adelphi has won their last four games, including the last three at home. The Panthers pitching has come alive in the last three contests, allowing just six runs, including helping Adelphi to two 2-1 wins over ECC opponent Concordia. Junior Bobby Lanigan went the distance in the first game of a doubleheader with Concordia on Saturday, March 22. Lanigan threw nine innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out 13 Concordia batters. Junior Rob Paccione hit .364 (4-11) on the week, helping Adelphi to a 3-0 record. In the Panthers 11-4 win over Briarcliffe College Paccione was 2-4 with two RBI and on walk, he was also 2-4 in Adelphi's 2-1 game two win over Concordia, driving in the winning run. In addition to his hitting Paccione stole three bases.
Queens: Knights hurler Brian Honeyman picked up the save in the first game and was the winner in the nightcap as Queens College swept Dowling College, 4-2 and 2-1, in a doubleheader on Saturday in Flushing. Honeyman pitched a one, two, three ninth to seal a 4-2, come from behind win for the home team in the opener. In game 2, Honeyman picked up the complete game victory, scattering four hits and striking out seven in seven innings of work. He finished with eight K's and 4 hits surrendered over 8 innings of work with an era of 1.12 ... Mike Sporton hit a solo homer in the sixth and, in the eighth, scored the go-ahead run on a suicide squeeze by Jared Stoler in the middle of a three run QC rally in their 4-2 win vs. Dowling ... a one out double by Denny Gonzalez in the bottom of the seventh plated Jamie Quinn with the game winning run for QC in their 2-1 win vs. Dowling.
Molloy: The Lions went 3-1 for the week.
They took a 5-3 victory over Post University and then swept STAC in
their doubleheader on March 22. Molloy dropped, 13-3 to STAC
in the first game of the series on March 20. Steven DeJesus,
Michael Maddi and Tim Byrne picked up wins on the mound, while
Scott Porter earned a save. T.J. Greig had four hits,
including a homerun, five RBI and three runs scored, while Rob
LaRusso pitched in with four hits, including two doubles, and five
RBI.
Bridgeport: Bridgeport is now 4-5 overall and 2-1
in ECC play after taking two of three games from C.W. Post over the
weekend. The Purple Knights won at CWP, 7-6, on Friday, and
split a doubleheader with the Pioneers at home on Saturday, losing
game one, 8-3 and winning game two, 2-1. In the win in game two on
Saturday, senior Brett Thornton drove in the game-winning run in
the bottom of the seventh inning with a one-out double. Junior
pitcher Riley Shuckerow had a save and a win over the weekend, as
he save the win on Long Island and pitched a complete game in the
team's 2-1 second game win on Saturday. Through nine games, Brett
Thornton and Mike Ferrara, who went 7 of 11 in the three games
versus C.W Post, lead the team in batting average at .407. Junior
pitcher Doug Wenz is 2-0 with a 1.71 E.R.A. in two starts and three
appearances so far in 2008. This week, Bridgeport is scheduled to
play at STAC on Wednesday, host St. Anselm on Friday, and play an
ECC series with Mercy on Saturday and Sunday.
New Haven: The Chargers went 3-2 last week, including an ECC split with Mercy at Vieira Field on Saturday. Jimmy Rivas led the club by hitting .500 for the week, driving in 8 of the team's 24 runs. Freshman Tom Rombilus hit .389 with a team-leading six runs scored, while freshman Greg Steele was 4-for-6 in two games and Tom Ballaro was 4-for-10 in four games. The pitching was much-improved last week, with UNH giving up 20 runs in five games, compared with 106 in their first 10 games of the season. Dan Blake led the way with a nine inning complete-game effort in a win at Wilmington (Del.) on Thursday. Dan Johnson was also sharp in two outings, striking out nine in 7 2/3 innings of work. Matt Sommo pitched 7 1/3 innings while striking out eight in his only appearance of the week.
Mercy: The Mavericks (5-11, 1-1 ECC) opened the week with an 8-6 defeat at Bloomfield on Monday, before splitting a doubleheader at New Haven (W 9-2, L 4-3) to open ECC play on Saturday. The Mercy pitching staff allowed just 10 earned runs in 23.2 innings for a 3.80 ERA. Freshman right-hander Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) improved to 3-0 as he worked the first seven innings of the win at New Haven, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five. On the season, Marsar has a 2.25 ERA, holding opponents to a .221 batting average against. Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) had a big performance in the win over the Chargers, going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Freshman hurler Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY) lowered his ERA to 3.21 when he allowed no earned runs in five innings of a tough 4-3 defeat in game two at New Haven. The right-hander has fanned 24 batters in 28 innings and has held opponents to a .231 batting average against. Junior Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) continues to shine out of the bullpen, posting a .250 ERA in 11 appearances, striking out 16 batters in 18 innings of work. Junior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) leads the Mercy regulars with a .326 batting average and is tied with Summer for the team RBI lead at nine. The Mavericks will play six times this week, taking on New Haven (Mar. 24), Southern Vermont (Mar. 25), Dowling (Mar. 26), and Bridgeport (Mar. 29 DH, Mar. 30).
C.W. Post: The Pioneers posted a 1-2 record this week in a three-game series against Bridgeport. Bridgeport edged out C.W. Post, 7-6, on Mar. 21 at C.W. Post. In a doubleheader at Bridgeport, the Pioneers took the first game, 8-3, and lost the second by a close 2-1 score. Senior Mike Sylvester combined to hit .615 in 13 appearances at the plate, with eight hits, including three triples, while driving in five and scoring four. The Pioneers will host Queens (N.Y.) on Mar. 26 before playing non-conference games against Briarcliffe (Mar. 27) and Bloomfield (Mar. 28) and will close out the week with a home doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas on Mar. 29.
Dowling: The Golden Lions had a 3-3 week starting out in Boca Raton, Florida where they swept Southern Connecticut and rebounded back from a 0-2 start vs. UMASS-Lowell to clench a 5-2 victory. Dowling fell to Dominican, 7-9 to close out their road trip and took back to back losses from Queens College. Senior, Kevin Reese led the Golden Lions with a combined seven hits for three runs and 1 RBI. The Golden Lions return to the field Monday March 24th.
Concordia: The Clippers lost a doubleheader to Adelphi on Saturday in their only games of the week by identical 2-1 scores. Freshman Joe Vaskas picked up 2 hits and scored a run in the opening game. In the second game, sophomore Donnie Roth finished with a hit and scored a run and senior Peter Dempsey had a hit and a RBI. The Clippers will have a busy week as they host Adelphi on Monday before traveling to New Haven on Wednesday and Dominican on Friday. The Clippers will finish out the week by hosting Queens in doubleheader action on Saturday and traveling to Queens on Sunday for a single game.
