Baden Player of the Week
Robert Paccione, Adelphi (Jr., OF, Bayside, N.Y. / St. Francis Prep) - Hit .526 over a six-game week (10-19) and slugged .684. He also stole four bases, picked up 10 hits, scored two runs and drove in two, picking up a double and a triple.
Baden Pitchers of the Week
Brent Lotito, Dowling (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place HS) - Picked up two wins (including career program record 22nd). Posted a win in relief against Mercy, bailing Dowling out of a no-out bases loaded jam in the 10th. He followed with a CG seven-hit shutout (5-0) against Adelphi, striking out nine and walking one.
Mark Fochesato, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr., SP, Middletown, NY /Pine) - Was 2-0 in 8 2/3 innings of work with a 0.00 ERA. Posted a win against Dominican (3 IP, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB) and a win against CW Post (5 2/3 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB).
Baden Rookie of the Week
Matt Walsh, Mercy (Fr., OF/P, Staten
Island, N.Y. / St. Peter's Boys HS) - Hit.471 (8-17) in four games
with at least a hit in each, slugged .588, had two RBI and was 6 of
6 in stolen base attempts. He tossed 5.2 innings of one-hit relief
(1 ER, 4 K) at Dowling, also going 2-for-2 (2 SB) including a swipe
of home. He also went 3-for-5 (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3 SB) in game one
against Bridgeport, and went 2-for-5 (SB) in game three of the
series.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In this week's NCBWA Northeast Regional Poll, Adelphi drops two spots to No. 5, Dowling moves up two spots to No. 6, Molloy moves up one spot to No. 8 and St. Thomas Aquinas is receiving votes.
New Haven: The Chargers picked up four conference wins in a 4-2 week, capped off by a 12-1 win over Molloy at Vieira Field on Sunday afternoon giving UNH the series win. Chad Lemos led the club at the plate hitting .346, driving in seven of the team's 34 runs. Lemos had four extra-base hits including three doubles and a home run. Michael Moras scored a team-high seven runs and collected eight hits along with a home run. Freshman Dan Rosa hit .350 with two doubles and a triple driving in four runs. Relief pitcher Mitch Rossi picked up two ECC wins for the Chargers as he went 2-0 in three appearances. Rossi only pitched 6.2 innings but struck out seven batters and finished the week with a 0.00 ERA. Matt Somo pitched a strong 8.0 innings on Saturday at Molloy to pick up a victory. In the win, he allowed just one run and struck out six. Freshman Mike Aquilino also picked up a win against Molloy going seven innings allowing just three hits and no runs.
Molloy: The Lions went 3-2 for the week with victories over New Haven, Adelphi and Nyack. Molloy dropped two games to New Haven. Andrew Scavuzzo recorded five hits and seven RBI, while Keith Kenny had five hits and five RBI. Steven DeJesus pitched a complete seven inning game with five hits, two earned runs, one walk and eight strikeouts. Michael Maddi and Eric Williams picked up the other two wins on the mound.
Dowling: The Golden Lions had a 4-2 week, 4-1 in ECC play and won their first conference series of the year against Adelphi. Brent Lotito picked up two victoiries on the mound and set the new Golden Lions career record at 22 with his complete game shutout on Saturday. Kevin Reese also had a milestone day picking up his 200th hit in the first inning. Dowling plays host to Mercy on Tuesday and entertains New Haven in conference play this weekend.
St. Thomas Aquinas: The Spartans went 3-1 in the conference, defeating Bridgeport 7-3, and taking the series 2-1 against CW Post with a pair of wins on Saturday 11-3, 11-7. They also defeated Dominican 4-3 in a regional game. They now stand at 12-11, 4-3. Jon Della Monica notched his fourth save and gave up his first earned run of the season after 14 innings of work. The senior closer has 15 Ks. Freshman Mark Fochesato notched two victories this week with wins over Dominican and CW Post. In 8 2/3 innings of work he did not allow an earned run, walked 1, and struck out 7. Freshman infielder Dan McDermott went 9-for-20 this week, with 7 RBIs. The Spartan pitching staff took a league leading 3.42 ERA into this week's action and the Spartans continue to be the top base stealing team in the conference after swiping 67 bases
Adelphi: The Panthers posted a record of 2-4 on the week, hitting .259 and striking out 46 batters as a team. Junior Robert Paccione hit .526 on the week (10-19) and slugged .684. He also stole four bases, picked up 10 hits, scored two runs and drove in two more, picking up a double and a triple during the week. Freshman Keith Couch made two appearances, starting two games and posting a record of 1-0 in 17 innings pitched. Couch posted an ERA of 1.06 with 13 strikeouts, picking up a win over Concordia on Monday and throwing nine innings of two run baseball in a 6-2 12 inning loss to Dowling.
Mercy: The Mavericks (8-13, 14-3 ECC) went 3-2 last week, all in ECC play. After dropping heartbreakers versus New Haven (4-3, 11 inn) and Dowling (6-5, 10 inn), they responded with a sweep of Bridgeport, winning 8-7 and 6-1 on Saturday, and 5-4 on Sunday. The sweep was the first of the three-game variety for the Mavericks since the 2001 season. Mercy batted .331 as a team for the week, stole 20 bases in 23 attempts, and posted a 2.76 ERA, holding opponents to a .199 batting average against. Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) batted .471 (8-17) and stole six bases in six attempts. Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) batted .450 (9-20) with three runs batted in. Sophomore Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) added a .375 week (6-for-16) with two stolen bases. Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) knocked in seven runs. On the mound, junior southpaw Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) gave Mercy two outstanding efforts allowing just four earned runs in 16.1 innings over two starts. After getting a no-decision on Monday, he came back to toss a complete game on Sunday in Mercy's win at Bridgeport. On Saturday, freshman Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) remained perfect at 4-0 with six innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one earned run in the second win over the Purple Knights. Freshman Alex Rodriguez (Miami, FL) notched the other win with 1.2 innings of relief without an earned run. Junior Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) appeared in four of the five games, allowing just one earned run and fanning five over 5.1 innings, while earning his second save of the season. The Mavericks will take on Dowling on Tuesday before a three-game set versus C.W. Post over the weekend.
C.W. Post: C.W. Post posted a 3-3 record last week. The Pioneers won contests against Queens and Briarcliffe at home before dropping games at Bloomfield and against St. Thomas Aquinas. The Pioneers closed out the week with an 8-3 win over the Spartans. Sophomore Mike Callaghan collected 11 hits, including a home run at Bloomfield, to lead the team at the plate. This week, C.W. Post will host Mercy on Apr. 1 before embarking on a road trip to face Felician, No. 6 Franklin Pierce and Mercy. The Pioneers will return the favor in hosting Mercy on Apr. 6.
Queens: Brian Honeyman pitched a four hit shutout in a 3-0 Knights win in the nightcap of a double dip at Concordia College on Saturday afternoon. Honeyman also struck out 10 and only walked one in improving to 2-0 in 2008 ... Luis Rojas had three hits and 3 RBI and Noel Gerena added three hits and two RBI to lead a 10 hit Knights' attack in a 9-8 loss to Felician College on Tuesday in Flushing ... For the week, Tom Pento hit .450 with nine hits and three RBI, Luis Rojas hit .300 with three RBI, Noel Gerena was five for ten with three RBI and Justin McKay was five for eleven.
Bridgeport: It was a tough week for the University of Bridgeport, as the Purple Knights went winless in four games. UB enters this week's play at 4-9 overall and 2-5 in ECC action. Mike Ferrara leads Bridgeport with a .386 batting average, and Brett Thornton is second in hitting with a .368 average, and he leads the team with 11 RBI. Peter Barrows leads the team in home runs with two. Doug Wenz is a perfect 2-0 on the mound for Bridgeport with a 3.86 E.R.A.
Concordia: In a busy week, the Clippers finished 2-4. The Clippers lost road games to Adelphi, New Haven and Dominican before splitting a home doubleheader against Queens on Saturday. Concordia finished the week with an 8-2 win at Queens on Sunday. Sophomore Donnie Roth batted .360 for the week, with 9 hits and 2 RBI. Roth also scored 5 runs for the Clippers. Freshman Mike Sciacchitano batted .400 for the week with 6 hits and 4 RBI. Senior Zach Staniewicz and junior Jose Aquino picked-up key wins on the mound. Staniewicz pitched a complete-game, allowing just 6 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 6 batters. Aquino, who also pitched a complete-game, allowed 8 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 9 batters. The Clippers will travel to New Haven on Tuesday and will host St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday and Molloy in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Clippers will finish the week on Sunday at Molloy.
