Baden Players of the Week
Evan Okon, New Haven (Jr., SS , Bellmore, N.Y. / Mepham H.S.) - Hit .556 (10-18) in a 3-2 week, accounting for 11 of the Chargers' 25 runs (6 RBI, 5 R). He had three doubles, slugged .722, and walked twice for a .619 on-base percentage.
John Mazello, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr., SS, Hyde Park, N.Y.) - Batted .429 (9-21, 3R, 6 RBI, 3 BB), slugged .714 (3 2b, HR), hit safely in five of six games and had three multiple hit games last week. He went 2-2 (4 RBI, GWRBI) in game two of a DH with Dowling and added a 3 for 6 outing (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) in game three against Dowling.
Baden Pitchers of the Week
Bobby Kay, C.W. Post (Jr., Stony Brook, N.Y. / Ward Melville) - Went 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA in two starts. Struck out 16 while issuing two walks, allowing two runs on seven hits, limiting the opposition to a .123 average. Tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Concordia.
Matt Sommo, New Haven (So., Clinton, Conn. / Morgan H.S.) - Did not allow a run in 10 innings (2 app.), striking out seven. Tossed a nine-inning CG three-hit shutout at Adelphi on Saturday, striking out seven after a scoreless relief inning against Concordia earlier in the week.
Baden Rookie of the Week
Robert LaRusso, Molloy (Fr., C/OF, Bayside, N.Y. / St. Francis Prep) - Hit .353 (6-16, 4 R) with six RBI and slugged .706 (3 2B, HR). In an 8-4 victory over Concordia, he was 3-4 (3 RBI, R). In the 13-3 game two victory over Mercy, he had three RBI on a hit with two runs scored.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In this week's NCBWA Northeast Regional Poll, Molloy jumps two spots to No. 4, Dowling moves up one spot to No. 6, New Haven moves from receiving votes up to No. 7, while Adelphi and Bridgeport are receiving votes.
New Haven: The Chargers won three of four ECC games last week to improve to 11-4 atop the conference standings. Evan Okon led the way, hitting a blistering .556 (10-18), and he factored in on 11 of the team's 25 runs (6 RBI, 5 R). Kyle Donnelly was also hot, going 8-for-20 (.400), while Jimmy Rivas hit .357. Michael Moras matched Okon with a team-leading six RBI's last week. On the pitching side, Matt Sommo held opponents scoreless through 10 innings, including a complete-game win at Adelphi on Saturday. T.J. Phelan nearly matched him, allowing just one run in 10 innings (0.90 ERA), including a 7-inning complete game win at Adelphi.
Molloy: The Lions went 4-1 on the week with victories over Concordia, Adelphi and Mercy. Their lone loss came from Mercy on April 12. Michael Maddi picked up two wins for the week, while Scott Porter earned three saves. Eric Williams and Steven DeJesus each earned the other victories on the mound. T.J. Greig led the Lions with nine hits, seven RBI and a .474 average, while Robert LaRusso added six hits, six RBI and a .353 average.
Dowling: The Golden Lions went 3-1 on the week beating Mercy College once and taking the series from STAC on the weekend. Brent Lotito led the way for Dowling picking up his sixth win on saturday complling eleven strikeouts breaking Dowling's all-time record. Freshman Raplh Tufano hit.455 going 5-11 with one RBI. In the latest NCBWA coaches Northeast Regional Poll the Golden Lions ranked sixth and return to action Tuesday away at Molloy, Wednesday Home against Mercy and a weekend series against C.W. Post.
Bridgeport: The Bridgeport baseball went 4-1 last week to even its season record at 10-10, and up the team's ECC mark to 8-6. Freshman Peter Barrows hit two home runs and had six RBIs last week. Barrows leads Bridgeport in home runs with four so far this season and runs batted in with 19. Junior Mike Ferrara is the team's leading hitter with a .366 batting average so far this season. Senior Seth Desautel is second in the team in batting average at .315 and second in RBIs with 16. Junior lefty Riley Shuckerow went 1-1 as a starter last week and notched two saves in relief. Shuckerow has appeared in a team-leading 10 games so far in 2008. Matt Kotuby leads the team with a 1.80 E.R.A. so far in 2008, Derek Cotoni leads the Purple Knights in innings pitched so far this season with 48.1 in seven starts.
C.W. Post: The Pioneers went 4-2 on the week, including a 4-1 record in the East Coast Conference. They were led by pitcher Bobby Kay, who won both his starts on the week. Offensively, Mike Sylvester continued his excellent performance, batting .462 on the week, scoring four runs while driving in five. Kyle Walker also drove in five runs for the Pioneers. C.W. Post takes on Caldwell College on Monday, April 13, before returning to conference action, taking on rival Adelphi on Tuesday, April 14.
Saint Thomas Aquinas: The Spartans remained in the thick of the ECC race at 7-7 despite having a 2-4 week. Shortstop John Mazzello (Hyde Park, NY) had a great week. The All-region infielder went 9-for-21(.429) with 6 RBIs, 3 doubles, and a homerun. He slugged at .714 fro the week while hitting safely in 5 of the 6 games. He also had a game-winning 2-RBI single in the 6th inning of a 7-inning, 7-5 win over Dowling. Sophomores Vin Malzahn (Port Jervis, NY) and Fernando Peralta (Pine Bush, NY) also had big weeks at the plate. Malzahn went 9-for-17(.529), with 4 runs, 2 RBIs, and 8 walks. His Ob % was an amazing .680 and he hit safely in 5 of 6 games. Peralta went 9-for-24 (.375) which included going 6-for-12 in the 3-game series vs Dowling. He had 4 RBIs and also hit safely in 5 of the 6 games. Junior pitcher Scott Sadowski (Bethpage, NY) picked up a 9-5 victory against Concordia. Freshman Kevin Ryan (Levittown, NY) recorded the save. Closer Jon Della Monica (Tappan, NY) went 3-scoreless innings, striking out 4 to pick up the victory over Dowling.
Adelphi: Adelphi held its opponents to a .186 average last week, while hitting .265. Panther pitchers also struck out 39 hitters in five games. Freshman Keith Couch made two starts last week for the Panthers, posting an ERA of 2.40 with 16 strikeouts. His best outing came on Sunday, April 13 against New Haven. Couch pitched nine innings, allowing just two runs and striking out 10 to help the Panthers snap a six game losing streak.
Queens: Mike Sporton was 9 for 21 (.429) with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 5 RBI's with at least one hit in all 5 games this past week. He was 3 for 5 with a double and 3 RBI's in the Knights 11-1 win at Bridgeport on Saturday and was 2 for 4 with an RBI vs. UB on Friday and 2 for 4 with a run scored in a 7-2 win at Briarcliffe on Thursday ... Carlos Suarez also hit over .400 for the week - 7 for 16 (.438) - with 4 runs scored and 4 RBI's ... Ed Hackimer hit .375 and Jamie Quinn hit .368 (7 for 19) with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored and 5 RBI's for the week ... The Knights sent nine men to the plate in a five run sixth en route to a 7-2, non-conference win at Briarcliffe College on Thursday. Pete Kirby pitched seven innings of six hit ball while surrendering one earned run in picking up the victory. Russel Furey mopped up with two scoreless innings in relief for QC. At the plate, Carlos Suarez went two for four with an RBI and Noel Gerena had a hit and two RBI's ... Brian Honeyman improved to 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA by pitching the Knights to an 11-1 win in game two on Saturday. Honeyman limited UB to three hits and struck out six over seven innings of work. QC took the lead for good in the second frame on a two RBI double by Carlos Suarez, who had three hits in the game. Tom Pento also had a big game at the plate with two doubles and four RBI's for the Knights.
Mercy: The Mavericks (9-18, 5-8 ECC) went 1-3 last week, all in ECC play. After falling 3-1 to Dowling, Mercy defeated Molloy 5-2, but then dropped a pair to the Lions, 13-3 and 8-7. Sophomore Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) batted .455 for the week, going 5-for-11 with two doubles. Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) posted a .333 batting average, going 4-for-12 with three doubles, an RBI and three runs scored. Ross leads the Mavericks on the year with a .318 batting average. Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) is second on the squad at .296 and leads the team with seven doubles and 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts. Freshman Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY) earned the Mavericks' win over Molloy, tossing a nine-inning complete game in which he scattered just six hits and struck out three. DiCarlo is now 3-2 on the year with a 3.33 ERA and a team-best 40 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .229 batting average against. The Mavericks have a full slate this week with six games in six days, including ECC tilts versus Queens, Dowling, and Adelphi (three).
Concordia: The Clippers went 1-5 this week with losses to Molloy, New Haven and STAC during the week. On Saturday, Concordia split a doubleheader with C.W. Post before falling in the finale on Sunday at C.W. Post. Sophomore T.J. Walsh hit his first home run of the season, a walk-off solo home run in the 7th inning to give the Clippers a 2-1 win over the Pioneers. Walsh hit .333 for the week, going 7-21 with 6 RBI and 3 doubles. Senior Peter Dempsey also drove in 6 runs for the Clippers for the week. Concordia will travel to STAC on Tuesday and will host Briarcliffe on Thursday. The Clippers will begin a 3-game series against Bridgeport on Saturday, hosting the Purple Knights for a doubleheader on Saturday and traveling to Bridgeport on Sunday.
