
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College men's tennis team used a
dominating performance to capture the ECC Men's Tennis Championship
5-1 over the Knights of Queens College today at the Meyers Tennis
Center in Bronxville, NY. The 12th ranked Clippers won their 12th
straight match and improve to 16-2 on the season. Queens College
falls to 10-6 on the season.
Concordia started out winning the top two doubles matches.
Sophomores Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) and Nik Boerger
(Muenster, Germany) defeated Marcelo Kim and Taylor Crabill at #1
doubles by the score of 8-2.
Seniors Kirill Azovtsev (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Vlad Malkin
(Moscow, Russia) won 8-3 over Fabio Minami and Dave Burstein at #2
doubles.
The Knights were able to get a point at #3 doubles when the duo of
Robby Scheuing and Ariel Nassim beat sophomore Henning Ruenz
(Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) and senior Vito Galatioto (Yonkers,
NY) 8-5.
In singles competition, Boerger made short work of Kim at #2
singles 6-0, 6-0 to give the Clippers a 3-1 lead. Rodrigo Teixeira
(Vitoria, Brazil) was next to finish, as the senior defeated
Burstein 6-0, 6-1 at #3 singles.
With the Clippers up 4-1 and only one more win to complete
the match, Grubin was able to finish off Fabio Minami at #1 singles
6-2, 6-2 to give Concordia their 16th conference championship and
an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament
in May.
Concordia will await the selection of the teams into the NCAA
Division II Men's Tennis Tournament, which will take place next
week.
