Queens College Assistant Vice President for Athletics Dr. Richard Wettan recently announced that Craig Schwartz has been named the College's new Men's Tennis Coach. Schwartz succeeds Alan Landes, who is retiring from coaching after 27 years at the helm of the Knights.
Schwartz comes to Queens after spending the last four years as Dowling College's Men's Tennis Coach where he led the Golden Lions to the NCAA Tournament in 2004, 2005 and 2006. His team also captured the NYCAC Tournament Championship in 2004, when he was named NYCAC Coach of the Year.
While pursuing a degree in business administration at Dowling, Schwartz was a member of their men's tennis team for four years. In 2000, he was ranked seventh in all of Division II in singles and won the Northeast Rolex Tournament. In his four years as a member of the Golden Lions he played number one in both singles and doubles each year and served as team captain for two years.
From 1997 to 2001 Schwartz served as a teaching professional at the Park Avenue Tennis Center in Huntington, NY. After earning his Bachelor's Degree from Dowling in 2001, Schwartz went on to play professionally on the ATP Tour until July of 2002. Upon his departure from the ATP Tour, he spent one year as a professional tennis coach for Marlene Weingartner, based in Langweld, Germany. During this period he coached at international tournaments in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Schwartz takes over for Alan Landes, whose teams won 342 matches and earned six NCAA bids, reaching the round of 32 in both 2005 and 2006. His teams also won six conference titles before joining the N.Y.C.A.C. in 1993. That same season Alan was named N.Y.C.A.C. Coach of the Year as his team captured the conference's inaugural Men's Tennis crown. Landes also won Coach of the Year awards in 2003 (Eastern Tennis Association) and 2004 (Intercollegiate Tennis Association - East). Landes will remain as Director of the Queens College Indoor Tennis Center and as the Athletic Department's Academic Advisor.
