Queens Picked to Repeat as ECC Men’s Tennis Champions

Central Islip, N.Y. – After two straight ECC Championships and three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Round of 16, the Queens College men’s tennis team has been selected as the favorite to capture another ECC title in 2012. Reigning ECC Player of the Year, Attila Toth, has also been selected by the conference’s coaches to earn the honor for the second straight year.

The Knights return five players from last year’s team that posted a 20-6 record and finished ranked No. 25 in the national rankings.  The squad also went undefeated in East Coast Conference action, clinching both the regular season and tournament championships.

Queens received four out of five first place votes to finish with 23 points in the preseason poll. University of the District of Columbia, 2011 ECC runner-up, took home the other first place vote to come in a close second with 21 points.

Toth, a senior, is coming off an impressive first season at Queens which saw him earn ITA All-American honors in addition to being named the ECC Player of the Year. In 2011, Toth posted a 21-2 record in singles play and teamed with Nikolaj Wulff to go 16-3 in doubles action. Both records helped him earn national rankings in the Campbell’s/ITA poll, finishing No. 11 in singles and No. 23 in doubles.

After the conclusion of fall action, Toth was ranked nationally in the Campbell’s/ITA polls once again. He currently holds the No. 17 spot in singles and is also ranked No. 15 in doubles.
