No. 24 Queens Knocks Off Dowling in ECC Semifinals, 5-0; Advances to Thursday's Championship Round

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The 24th-ranked and top-seeded Queens College men's tennis team moved to 17-3 on the 2011-12 season Tuesday afternoon, as the Knights downed visiting Dowling College, the No. 4 seed, by a 5-0 count in the East Coast Conference semifinals.

QC will next play host to the ECC finals Thursday afternoon, at a time to be determined, against either second-seeded District of Columbia, or third-seeded New York Institute of Technology.

The Knights continued to get strong play out of their doubles tandems, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead before singles matches began. The senior class played a large role in QC's successes, as Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) and Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) started things out with an 8-0 shutout at the No. 3 flight versus Francisco Del Castillo and Michael Sinclair. Fellow upperclassmen Claudi Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) and Tyrone Ewels (Pietermartizburg, S. Africa) toppled Eduardo Ribeiro and Sardorja Mamadjanov by an 8-2 count at No. 2, while the twelfth-ranked tandem of senior Attila Toth (Budapest, Hungary) and junior Nikolaj Wulff (Munich, Germany) scored an 8-4 decision in the No. 1 flight over Viktor Kim and Francesc Terns.

Smith, recently named ECC Player of the Week, was the first singles player to wrap up his match with a 6-love, 6-2 decision in the No. 6 flight over Sinclair. Sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) wrapped up the match at the No. 2 flight, besting Del Castillo by a 6-love, 6-1 count.
