Flushing, N.Y. - The No. 19 NYIT men's tennis team cruised to an East Coast Conference Championship berth with a 5-0 semifinal victory over St. Thomas Aquinas Friday afternoon at Queens (N.Y.) College. The Bears improved to 18-5 on the season, while the Spartans bring the year to a close 7-12 overall.
ECC Rookie of the Year, Matej Selecky (Bratislava, Slovakia), clinched the match victory with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Thomas Schumann at fifth singles.
NYIT earned its first win at second doubles as Nicolas Auruccio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Nicolas Heintz (Strasbourg, France) blanked Javier Munoz and William Tronsor 8-0. The Bears' second point was with an 8-1 victory by ECC Player of the Year Julio Pulido(Caceras, Spain) and Selecky over Antoine Venard and Inigo Aldekoa at first doubles.
NYIT swept the doubles matches with an 8-1 triumph by Rafal Charkiewicz (Opole, Poland) and Tomas Lieb (Buenos Aires, Argentina) over Michael Tasaro and Daniel Maysonet at the No. 3 spot.
Lieb then brought the the Bears to match point with an 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Tasaro at sixth singles before Selecky sealed the victory.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 26 when they face Queens College. First serve is scheduled for Noon in Flushing, N.Y.
