Flushing, N.Y. - Freshman Nicolas Heintz (Strasbourg, France) dominated his fourth singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Kevin Burgess of Queens (N.Y.) to clinch the 2014 East Coast Conference Championship title for No. 19 NYIT, 5-0. NYIT improved to 19-5 on the season and earns an automatic bid to the NCAA East Regional Tournament.
For the second straight match, the Bears cruised through doubles play surrenduring just two game points. Rafal Charkiewicz (Opole, Poland) and Tomas Lieb (Buenos Aires, Argentina) topped Adam Pizow and Howard Wong 8-1 at third doubles for the first point of the match.
ECC Player of the Year Julio Pulido (Caceras, Spain) and ECC Rookie of the Year Matej Selecky (Bratislava, Slovakia) then defeated Andre Pellegrino and Christopher Baron 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. Nicolas Auruccio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Heintz earned the doubles sweep with an 8-0 blanking of Younes Hidass and Burgess at second doubles.
Heading into singles play leading 3-0, NYIT needed just two more points to take home the title. Selecky brought the Bears to match point with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Wong at sixth singles and was then followed by Heintz at fourth singles.
Last year, the Bears defeated the Knights 5-0 in the ECC Championship final to earn the program's first-ever conference crown. NYIT was the picked as the preseason favorite and earned the regular-season championship with a perfect 6-0 mark.
