Old Westbury, N.Y. - The NYIT men's tennis team will be taking a trip back to the NCAA Round of 16 after defeating Chestnut Hill College Tuesday afternoon 5-1. The Bears won against Merrimack College in the first round to advance to the East Region I finals and improve to 20-3 this season.
NYIT was off to a hot start after sweeping doubles play against the Griffins. Tomas Lieb and David Jiang opened with an 8-2 victory over Pedro Regalin and Lucas Bocaletto at the second spot. Shortly after, Rafal Charkiewicz and Rares Ispas took an 8-6 win at No. 3 to improve to 17-5 as a pair this season. Closing out doubles play for the Bears was top flight duo Matej Selecky and Jorge Gonzales Soler who won 8-5 against Pierre Kohler and Jonathan Ducretot.
Needing just two wins in the singles session Charkiewicz picked up the first with a defeat of Adam Gavin at third singles. Unsatisfied, the Griffins came back to win their lone point of the match at No. 1 when Bocaletto defeated David Jiang 6-3, 6-1. Clinching the match for the second day in a row was Ispas, who punched the Bears' ticket with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Henry Boyle.
The regional champion will advance to the Sweet 16 National Championships, which is part of the 2016 NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival, May 18-21, in Denver. Colo.
