Central Islip, N.Y. - In a vote by the conference's coaches, Queens College senior, Sharvill Nawghre (Nagpur, India), has been named the 2017 East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year. Paul Langbroek (Munich, Germany) of Roberts Wesleyan College has been selected as the league's Rookie of the Year.
Nawghre earns his third straight All-Conference selection and the first major award of his career after helping the Knights to an ECC Regular Season Championship. He was nearly unbeatable in ECC play, finishing with a 5-0 mark in singles and a 4-1 mark at doubles. Four of his five singles wins came at the No. 1 position, as did all five of his doubles victories. Nawghre, who finished with a 13-8 overall singles record, was also a perfect 10-0 against East Region opponents and saw seven of his eight losses come to nationally ranked or Division I opponents. In addition, Nawghre teamed with Roman Laga to capture the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Doubles Championship in the fall portion of the season.
Langbroek, a three-time Rookie of the Week, put together an impressive debut season in Rochester to win the conference's Rookie of the Year. Langbroek compiled a record of 20-8 in singles play and 19-8 in doubles action. Langbroek was solid in ECC play as well, going 4-1 at No. 2 singles and 5-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Queens College head coach, Somadi Druker, has been named the league's Coach of the Year for the third straight season. Druker guided her squad to 5-0 mark in conference play to clinch the Knights' first ECC Regular Season title since 2012. Druker has also guided the Knights to an 12-5 overall record, a No. 47 national ranking in the latest ITA poll, and the No. 1 spot in the latest NCAA Division II East Region ranking.
