Five ECC Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Headed to NCAA Tournament

Indianapolis -  Five East Coast Conference tennis teams were selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Championships on Tuesday evening. NYIT and Queens College both had their men's and women's teams earn bids, while University of the District of Columbia men's team was also selected.

On the men's side, Queens (14-5) received an automatic bid after winning their first ECC Championship since 2012 this past weekend. The Knights, who are making their 16th straight NCAA appearance, earn the No. 1 seed in the East Region and will host the East Region 1 bracket.

As the top seed, Queens receives a bye into the Second Round and will take on the winner of No. 4 Southern New Hampshire and No. 5 Post. The Knights did not play Southern New Hampshire during the regular season, but defeated Post by a margin of 8-1 on April 11.

NYIT (11-5) earns the No. 3 seed in their sixth straight NCAA Tournament. The Bears will have a familiar opponent in No. 6 seed UDC (6-7). The Firebirds earn their first selection since 2015 and the fourth in program history. This will be the third meeting between the two schools in the last 15 days with the previous two won by NYIT.

The Bears and Firebirds will battle in Philadelphia, Pa. as No. 2 seed, Chestnut Hill will host the East Region 2 bracket. Chestnut Hill. who beats both NYIT and UDC earlier this season, will take on No. 7 seed, Merrimack, in a First Round match.

On the women's side, NYIT earned the No. 1 seed after a compiling a perfect 15-0 record to date. The Bears, who are in the field for the fifth straight season after claiming their fifth straight ECC title, receive a bye in the First Round. They will take on the winner of the First Round match between No. 4 Adelphi and No. 5 Stonehill, who will also serve as the host for the East Region 1 bracket.

NYIT has not played either of their potential Second Round opponents this season. A win would send NYIT to their fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Round of 16.

Queens (13-3) will host the East Region 2 bracket after earning the No. 2 seed for their 16th straight and 17th overall NCAA Tournament appearance. The Knights also have a First Round bye and will take on the winner of No. 3 Goldey-Beacom and No. 6 Southern New Hampshire in the Second Round. Queens topped Goldey-Beacom by a score of 8-1 on April 10 but has not played Southern New Hampshire this season.
