Philadelphia — The NYIT men's tennis team is through one round of the NCAA championships.
The third-seeded Bears defeated sixth-seeded District of Columbia, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon to advance to a matchup with host Chestnut Hill, the No. 2, seed on Sunday at 11 a.m.
It marked the third straight weekend NYIT (12-4) had topped its East Coast Conference rival. The Bears also beat the Firebirds during the final weekend of the regular season, then in the league playoff semifinals.
The winner of Sunday's NYIT-Chestnut Hill showdown will advance to the May 9-12 final rounds in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
On Saturday, the Bears took two of three doubles matches. They then closed out the Firebirds when Alexandre Martinez in fifth singles (6-1, 6-3), David Jiang in fourth singles (7-6, 6-1) and Jorge Gonzales Soler in sixth singles (7-5, 6-1) consecutively won singles matches. Gonzales was making his spring debut.
