Baden Player of the Week
Amanda Wentz, Bridgeport (Jr., 3b/1B, Baker City, Ore.) - Hit .500 (9-18) in a 5-1 week with four home runs and eight RBI. She added four doubles, walked four times, did not strike out, stole a base and slugged 1.333 while going errorless in the field (15 chances) at third and first base.
Baden Pitcher of the Week
Samantha Yodowitz, C.W. Post (Sr., Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) - Posted a 3-0 record with two shutouts and allowed just one earned run in 19 innings for a 0.47 ERA. Against NYIT, pitched her fourth shutout of the season (4H, 5K). Against Caldwell, tossed pitched a CG (5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER), striking out four. Added another CG (7 IP, 2H) against New Haven with 11 strikeouts.
Baden Rookies of the Week
Alexandra Sydor, Molloy (Fr., SS, Glen Cove,
N.Y. / Holy Trinity HS) - In a 4-4 week, hit .536 (15-28, 7 R) with
16 RBI, and slugged .679. Went 3 for 4 (6 RBI, R) in a 13-2
win over Bentley. In the 16-2 game win over Goldey-Beacom,
she was 3 for 4 (3 RBI, 2 R) and in game two added three hits (3
RBI, R). In an DH loss to Bridgeport, she knocked in two and added
two hits in game two.
Christina Berardi, C.W. Post (Fr., P, Raynham,
Mass. / Bridegewater-Raynham) - Posted a 2-1 mark and 0.39 ERA (23
IP, 1 ER, 15 H, 20 K). She tossed two shutouts (New Haven, NYIT)
and notched 10 strikeouts against both New Haven and Caldwell.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In the first NCAA Northeast regional top
10 poll, C.W. Post is No. 1, Adelphi is No. 3 and NYIT is No.
4.
C.W. Post: C.W. Post climbed back into the NFCA
poll, moving up to No. 13 this week. The Pioneers recorded a
5-1 record this week, including a 4-0 mark in the conference.
Offensively, C.W. Post batted .317 as a team and outscored its
opponents, 30-3. Senior Samantha Yodowitz recorded two
shutouts, pitching 19 innings and allowing just one run with 20
strikeouts. Senior first baseman Holly Eringis batted .417 at
the plate with eight hits with four RBI. At the plate, she
batted This week, the Pioneers will host Bridgeport on Apr. 15 and
will play at Dominican on Apr. 17 before closing out the week
against Southern New Hampshire (Apr. 19) and UMass Lowell (Apr.
20).
Adelphi: Adelphi finished the week with a 7-1
record, including 2-0 in conference action. Senior Julie Schaper
started in all eight games for the Panthers last week, leading them
to a 7-1 record. She hit .455 with 10 hits and three runs
scored with 22 at-bats. She had three RBI and a .545 slugging
percentage. On the mound, Schaper posted a 0.78 ERA on a 4-0 week
(4 starts, 3 complete games). She gave up 20 hits, three runs
(earned), walked nine and struckout 36 in 27 innings. Against
Franklin Pierce, she gave up just two hits in the, 4-0 shutout,
walking two and fanning 15. Senior Dely Francisco hit .320 with
eight hits and eight runs scored. She added five more stolen bases
to her new Adelphi single season best record of 31. She surpassed
Doreen Lumbra's record of 28 in a season set back in 1990 for the
then Division I Panthers. She needs just ten more bases to surpass
Lumbra for the career record of 81. Adelphi returns to action on
Tuesday, April 15, as they play host to Queens College.
Bridgeport: Bridgeport went 5-1 on the week to
even its season record at 13-13 and up its East Coast Conference
mark to 7-3. Bridgeport swept doubleheaders with Molloy and
Concordia, and split a twin bill with Dowling. Juniors Amanda Wentz
and Hannah Larson were terrors at the plate for the Purple Knights
last week, as they batted .500 and 476 respectively. Wentz
had four home runs and 8 RBI on the week, and Larson went deep
three times with 8 runs batted in. Freshman pitcher Dan Amatucci
went a perfect 3-0 as a starter last week. Fifth-year UB head coach
Valerie Steen earned her 100th career win with her team's 5-1 over
Dowling in the second game of last Saturday's doubleheader. Hannah
Larson leads the team with a .386 batting average so far this
season. Larson is tied for the team lead in home runs with
Amanda Wentz, as they each have gone deep five times so far in
2008., and she leads the team in RBI with 19. Brittany Steiner is
second in batting average at .329. Tricia Lee has struck out 56
batter sin 49 innings pitched so far in 2008.
Molloy: The Lady Lions went 4-4 on the week with
losses to STAC and Bridgeport and victories over Bentley College
and Goldey-Beacom. Alexandra Sydor hit .536 with 15 hits, 16
RBI, seven runs scored and a .679 slugging percentage, while Nicole
Losito had 11 RBI off nine hits, which included four doubles and
two triples. She hit .333 with two stolen bases and nine runs
scored. Florence Williams picked up two wins on the mound,
while Amanda Havdolgous grabbed the other two. Michelle Walsh
added 15 hits, 14 runs scored, 8 RBI and four stolen
bases.
New Haven: After a tough start to the week at C.W.
Post, the Chargers won five of six to get back to the .500 mark for
the first time since coming back from Florida. UNH went 4-2 in the
conference to move up in the standings with back-to-back
doubleheader sweeps over St. Thomas Aquinas and Queens. Sophomore
Meghan Walter led the way for the Chargers as she batted .429 with
six extra base hits (5 doubles, 1 triple). Walter also accounted
for 12 of the 34 runs scored, crossing the plate nine times during
the week. Meg Brown paced the Chargers in the circle going
3-1 and striking out 33 batters. Brown limited the opponents to 11
hits and had a 0.88 ERA. Brown also had a good week at the plate,
hitting .400
NYIT: Junior Brilynn Fields batted .385 (10-26) with two homeruns, three doubles, seven RBI and a .731 slugging percentage last week, including a 3-for-4 performance with a home run, two RBI and a run scored in a game-one loss at Dowling. Junior Lia Lara batted .435 (10-23) on the week, recording three doubles a triple, two RBI and was 3-3 in stolen bases. Junior Nina Cesare went 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in six appearances, including a four-hit, one-run performance in a 1-0 loss to No. 13 C.W. Post on Saturday.
Queens: Senior Allison Castellucci was the only Lady Knight to hit .300 (6 for 20) for the week. Nicole Mancusi led QC with 7 hits and 3 RBI's in eight games. Christy Sanders struck out 17 in 18.2 innings of work this past week.
Dowling: The Golden Lions, in a week packed with conference match ups, posted a 4-2 record including a sweep of Queens College along with a split with the University of Bridgeport and a split with NYIT. Kristina DeMeo led the Golden Lions at the plate hitting .474 with 7 RBIs and 5 runs scored. Taras Wallace also added to the offence batting .467 on the week.
Mercy: The Mavericks (6-19, 2-8) had a rough week dropping all eight games played. Leading the way offensively last week was freshman Alicia Martin (Massapequa, NY) who batted .313 with two doubles and a team-leading .421 on base percentage. Martin hit safely in five of the eight games played and was 1-for-1 with a run scored in the second game of a doubleheader against Le Moyne. Freshman Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) hit .300 with one run scored and one run driven in. Curry also walked twice and struck out only once in 20 at bats. In the first game of a double-dip against Le Moyne she went 2-for-4 and had one hit and an RBI against Dominican (game two). Freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY) led the team with three runs scored and bolstered her on base percentage by walking four times. On the season, freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) leads the team in batting (.403), hits (29), runs (16), on base percentage (.449), slugging percentage (.569), total bases (41) and is tied with Martin for RBI with 12. Senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) is second on the team in batting with a .299 average and has two victories on the mound this season. Curry is batting .288 with nine runs driven in and seven runs scored. She also has a team best 11 walks and has struck only four times in 66 at bats. The Mavericks will be back in action on Monday at Nyack and Saturday at Bridgeport.
Concordia: The Clippers went 1-3 this past week. Concordia split with NYIT, falling 4-1 in the first game and winning 7-4 in the second game. Freshman Jaime Lorenzo hit her first home run of the season and finished the week with 5 hits and 5 RBI. Lorenzo also scored 6 runs. Junior Alex Mazza had 4 hits and 4 RBI for the week and freshman Dena Frederick collected 5 hits and scored 4 runs. The Clippers will host Dowling on Tuesday and Mercy on Thursday before traveling to New Haven on Saturday.
