
Brookhaven, NY - Tournament Most valuable Player Samantha Yodowitz fired a complete game two hitter, allowing one run guiding top seeded C.W. Post past second seeded Adelphi, 2-1 to capture the 2008 East Coast Conference softball championship at Dowling College Saturday.
Yodowitz, who went 3-0 during the double-elimination tourney, struck out five, walked one and held Adelphi hitless after giving up two singles in the first as the Pioneers (44-14) captured seventh tournament title overall, second in the last three years and fifth in the last seven.
The game turned into a pitcher's duel between the top two hurlers in the ECC as Adelphi's Julie Schaper spun a three hitter, allowing two runs (one earned), striking out three and walking five.
The Panthers (40-19) jumped ahead in the first s Dely Francisco and Katie Brophy led off with back-to-back singles with Francisco stretching the hit to land and third, allowing Brophy to pull into second. Diana DiPaiano later followed with a one-out fielder's choice that scored Francisco.
The Pioneers tied it in the second as Melissa Hippo and Yodowitz drew walks and Megan Correia followed with a one-out RBI single to plate Hippo.
C.W. Post grabbed what proved to be the game winner in the bottom of the fourth as Hippo, who led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out and went to third as the bases filled following two walks. Amanda Aiello followed reaching on an infield error that pushed Hippo home.
Adelphi mounted one last rally in the top of the sixth, putting the two leadoff hitters on after two fielding errors, but Yodowitz got Brophy to ground into a close double play, pushing Francisco to third, but Yodowitz induced another ground out to quell the rally.
Both teams will have the opportunity for a rematch in the upcoming NCAA regional tournament, which will take place at C.W. Post, which entered the ECC tourney as the top ranked team in the region, beginning Wednesday, May 7. Adelphi, which entered the tourney ranked third, is expected to among the top four of the eight-team double elimination tourney that runs through Saturday. Two fellow ECC clubs, NYIT and New Haven, were also ranked among the top eight, and await their fait when the selection call takes place Saturday evening.
