Salem, Va. - On Thursday, the No. 20 LIU Post softball team opened play at the NCAA Division II National Championship with an 8-1 loss to top-ranked West Texas A&M at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
After the Pioneers (50-10) were retired in order in the top of the first, the Lady Buffs (57-7) started the scoring in their half of the frame. Junior outfielder Tyler Wilkinson (Idaho Falls, Idaho), following a one-out walk, subsequently stole second and scored on a pair of errors to give her squad a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, junior utility Kaisha Dacosin (Kaneohe, Hawaii) ripped an RBI double to make it a two-run game.
In the fourth, West Texas A&M put the game out of reach, tacking on a five-spot to extend its advantage to 7-0. Junior infielder Allie Cranfill (Frisco, Texas) anchored the inning with a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to right field.
LIU Post got on the board for its only run of the contest in the top of the sixth. Junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) reached on a two-out RBI infield single, plating junior outfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.).
Junior pitcher Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) took the loss in the decision for the Pioneers, who committed five errors defensively. She yielded seven runs (two earned), six walks and four hits over 3.2 innings of work, while striking out three. Freshman hurler Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) came in for relief, tossing 2.1 frames of two-hit, one-run ball.
LIU Post now moves into the loser's bracket, where they will face West Chester on Saturday (May 24) in a must-win elimination game. First pitch is set for noon. All of the action will be carried live on NCAA.com.
