Molloy, Mercy, and NYIT Headed to NCAA Softball Championship

Indianapolis - East Coast Conference members Mercy College, Molloy College, and NYIT will compete for a National Championship after earning a spot in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship field released on Monday morning.

Molloy (32-16) earned the highest seed among the three teams and will host the East 2 Regional as the No. 2 seed. The Lions, who were ECC Co-Regular Season Champions, at-large selection is the sixth in program history (all since 2010) and their second straight berth.

Molloy's will have a familiar first round opponent when they take on No. 7 seed, NYIT (25-18). The Bears, who finished the regular season by winning 11 of its final 14 games, earn the second NCAA appearance in program history and the first since 2008.

NYIT holds a 3-2 edge in the season series against Molloy, including a 3-0 win over the Lions in the opening game of last weekend's ECC Championship.

The other two teams in the East 2 Regional bracket will  No. 3 seed and champions of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), Caldwell University (43-14), and No. 6 seed, Merrimack College (33-13).

The other half of the bracket will include ECC Champion, Mercy (32-14), competing in the East 1 Regional as the No. 5 seed. The Mavericks claimed their first-ever ECC Championship on Sunday afternoon to earn the conference's automatic bid and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Mercy will take on No. 4 seed, New Haven (30-14) in their opening game of the tournament. This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2012. New Haven holds an 18-3 record all-time against the Mavericks.

The East 1 Regional will take place on the campus of No. 1 seed and Northeast 10 Champion, Adelphi (35-13-1), in Garden City, N.Y. The fourth and final team in that half of the bracket is No. 8 Wilmington (34-19).

Both sides of the East Region bracket will begin play on Thursday, May 11th and will conclude on Saturday, May 13th. The winner of each bracket will advance to play each other on May 18th in a best-of-three East Region Super Regional with a spot in the NCAA Division II World Series on the line.
