Bridgeport Volleyball Closes Out Record Setting Regular Season With Wins Over SNH and Southern Conn.
New Haven, CT-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball
team closed out its record setting 2008 regular season with a dose
of southern hospitality in New Haven, CT on Saturday afternoon, as
the Purple Knights swept Southern New Hampshire (25-19, 25-18,
25-18) and Southern Connecticut State University (25-23, 25-8,
25-17) in a tri-match hosted by SCSU. With the two wins, UB
increased its all-time single season record for victories to 25,
and the team heads into the ECC Championship Tournament with a
25-12 mark. Prior to this year, no Bridgeport volleyball team
had posted more than 20 wins in a single season. The win over
Southern New Hampshire also gave coach Valerie Steen her 100th
career
victory in five season as UB's head volleyball coach.
Sophomore Ivana Kovacevic-Jurasin (Belgrade, Serbia) amassed 29
kills in
the two matches on Saturday (nine versus SNHU and a match-high 20
against
SCSU).
In the Southern New Hampshire match, senior Emma Ariyo (Kampala,
Uganda)
led UB with 10 kills. She smashed those 10 kills with no
errors on 21
total attacks to hit a smoking .476 in the three sets.
Junior libero JJ Edwards (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada) led the
Bridgeport
defense with 14 digs in Saturday's first match and 23 digs in
the
nightcap.
Setter Milica Micovic (JR, Belgrade, Serbia) had 21 assists in
match one
and added 28 in the win over Southern Connecticut.
The Purple Knights will next in in action at home in Hubbell Gym
on
Wednesday night, November 12th at 7:00 p.m., as UB opens the East
Coast
Conference Championship Tournament with a quarterfinal match-up
with
Molloy College. Bridgeport enters the tourney as the number
two seed, and
Molloy is the number seven seed in the field of eight teams.
