PHILADELPHIA - Southern Connecticut State senior forward Kate Lynch leads the 2007-08 Daktronics All-Northeast Region team, earning Player of the Year honors. For Lynch, it marks the second straight season on the Daktronics All-Northeast Region team as she was a first-team selection a year ago when she led the Owls to the NCAA Division II Championship.
A native of Rumford, R.I., Lynch ranks second in the Northeast 10 in scoring this season with 21.8 ppg and concludes her career as the Owls' all-time leading scorer with 1,779 career points. Joining Lynch on the first-team are senior forward Alexis Castro of American International, senior forward Toni Jones of Goldey-Beacom College, senior guard Kelly Killion of Holy Family University and sophomore forward Johannah Leedham of Franklin Pierce College.
The 2007 Daktronics Northeast Region Player of the Year, Castro ranks third in the Northeast 10 in scoring and rebounding with 18.7 ppg and 9.1 rpg, respectively, helping the Yellow Jackets to a 17-12 overall record. Jones, who led the CACC in scoring this season with 21.5 ppg, makes her first appearance on the All-Region team after another standout season for the Lightning. Killion, who earned CACC Player of the Year accolades for the second consecutive season, has led the Tigers to a perfect 30-0 overall mark this season and a #4 ranking in the most recent USA Today/ESPN Division II women's basketball poll. Leedham, meanwhile, earned her second consecutive place on the first-team, topping the Northeast 10 in scoring with 22.2 ppg while her 3.34 steals per game also lead the league. For her efforts, Leedham was tabbed the 2008 Northeast 10 Player of the Year.
Five players were selected to the second team, including a freshman and a pair of sophomores. The team consisted of forward Ashley Webster of Philadelphia University, the lone senior; junior forward Kelsey Simonds of Stonehill College, center Jessica Romano of Philadelphia University and guard Amelia Simmons of Wilmington University, both sophomores, and freshman standout Amanda Bartlett, a guard from Queens College.
Sports Information Directors throughout the Northeast Region conducted the voting. The 2007-08 Daktronics Women's Basketball All-America team will be announced in conjunction with the 2008 NCAA Division II "Elite Eight" in Kearney, Neb. The five first-team members from each of the country's eight regions are placed on the national ballot with Division II SIDs selecting first, second and third-team All-America honorees. The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing, and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition.
