Rochester, N.Y. – The No.3 Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team took down No.6 Daemen on Wednesday night, 76-64 in the first round of the East Coast Conference Championships. The Redhawks will move on to the semifinals and face No.2 Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday in the Voller Athletic Center.
Four players put up double digit points for the Redhawks with the sophomore duo of Emily Miller and Taya Andrews leading the way with 17 points each. Miller also added 18 rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Andrews had five boards, two assists, and two steals.
Other than early in the first quarter the Redhawks controlled the lead 35 minutes of the game. The largest lead of the contest came in the third quarter when a layup by Tashayla Sutorius put Roberts up by 19.
Daemen wouldn't go away easy and found their way back into the game with two minutes left in the fourth quarter. A basket by Sarah Saba at the 2:02 mark cut the Redhawks double digit lead to eight points. An old-fashioned three point play by Sydney Jones with 1:24 remaining made the score 65-60, but a timely basket by senior Necedah James helped halt the Wildcats' momentum.
Down the stretch the Redhawks converted on 9-of-10 from the free throw line to prevent any further comeback from Daemen.
Roberts held the edge in shooting percentage going 28-of-58 (48.3%) to the 24-of-65 (36.9%) shooting by the Wildcats.
Saba led the way for Daemen in her final game for the Wildcats. The senior had 22 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and three steals.
Lucy Covley and James were the other double digits scorers for Roberts with 11 points and 10 points respectively.
Roberts Wesleyan (20-9) will play No.2 STAC in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The ECC Championships are being hosted by Roberts and the game will be played in the Voller Athletic Center.
