Salem, Va. - The LIU Post women's lacrosse team saw its 2014 campaign come to an end Saturday, as the Pioneers fell to Adelphi, 17-10, in the semifinals of the 2014 Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem, Va.
The Pioneers (18-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior attacker Samantha Losco (Smithtown, N.Y.) got a feed from fellow senior attacker Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) with 24:01 on the clock.
Adelphi (21-0) responded with three quick goals of their own to open a 3-1 advantage just over 10 minutes into the action.
Senior midfielder Katie Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) scored with 17:37 on the clock to make it 3-2. But, the Panthers had an answer, scoring a little over a minute later to extend their lead to 4-2.
Freshman attacker Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) would record the Pioneers' third goal at the 13:19, an unassisted tally. That would be all the green and gold would get in the opening half, as Adelphi rattled off five-straight goals to hold a 9-3 advantage at the break.
After Adelphi opened the second half with two goals, LIU Post scored two goals less than a minute apart to begin their comeback. Sileo found the back of the net off a Vagelatos helper, then Sileo found junior midfielder Jenna Pierro (Holbrook, N.Y.) for a goal, making it an 11-5 game in favor of Adelphi.
The two teams then traded goals, each scoring twice. Each time LIU Post would seem to get back in rhythm, the Panthers had an answer.
With less than three minutes on the clock, senior attacker Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Losco each netted a tally before the final horn sounded.
Losco led the Pioneers with four points (2g, 2a), while Vagelatos added two goals and an assist. Sileo also tallied three points (1g, 2a).
The Pioneers conclude the 2014 season at 18-2.
