BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 11, 2007) - C.W. Post scored early and was able to protect the lead and pull away with a 3-0 win over Dowling College in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon on Robert Blitz Field.
The Pioneers win their 13th straight match and improve to 17-1-2 overall while Dowling finishes its season with a 15-7-1 record.
"We're playing well," said C.W. Post head coach Drayson Hounsome. "With more games played we get better. We match up well against Dowling and we have to make it tough for teams to break us down."
C.W. Post scored its first goal in the 10th minute when senior defender Nicole Dunn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored on a rebound shot into the right corner off junior forward Maria Sonnerborg (Bjarred, Sweden).
Freshman midfielder Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) scored her 18th goal of the season in the 49th minute when she took a pass from sophomore forward Melissa Pascarella (Sayville, N.Y.) and dribbled around Dowling's keeper to score on the open net.
The Pioneers added their third goal minutes later when Sonnerborg controlled the ball and shot to the left of the keeper on a cross pass from freshman midfielder #Danielle DeLuca (Islip, N.Y.) in the 58th minute.
C.W. Post completed the game outshooting Dowling, 20-8, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Kim Yacenda (Greenlawn, N.Y.) stopped three shots to record her seventh shutout of the season.
For the Golden Lions, freshman goalkeeper Alicia Commiso (Floral Park, N.Y.) made eight saves in goal.
C.W. Post will face 19th-ranked West Chester University in the third round of the tournament next weekend at a site yet to be determined.
