NYIT Women's Tennis Advances to ECC Finals, Drops LIU Post 5-2

Queens, N.Y. - After drawing the No. 1 seed for the East Coast Conference Tournament, the NYIT women's tennis matched up against No. 4 LIU Post in the semifinals Friday afternoon at the Queens College Tennis Center. Going up 2-1 in doubles play, the Bears completed a 5-2 decision to advance to the championship round where they will face the winner of No. 3 District of Columbia/No. 2 Queens College on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The duo of Alexandra Borgenhoff and Paulina Velasquez were first to get NYIT on the board with an 8-0 defeat of Laura Harwell and Meagan Byrne at No. 3 doubles. LIU Post quickly answered, posting an 8-1 win over Justyna Krol and Rosa LaCorte at first flight, but the pair of Gabriela Siembab and Melanie Benyadi came back at the Pioneers with an 8-1 victory to give NYIT a 2-1 lead.

In singles play,Borgenhoff and Velasquez quickly tacked on two more for the Bears, defeating their counterparts at No. 5 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Not going down quietly, LIU Post's Byrne came back to earn a three-set victory at No. 6 over LaCorte, but Krol clinched the match for the Bears with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win against Did Fatchikova at second flight.

The team improves to 12-0 and will return back to the ECC Championship, hosted at the Queens College Tennis Center to defend their 2014 crown at noon on Saturday, Oct. 24.
