Flushing, N.Y. - The NYIT women's tennis team will appear in the East Coast Conference Championships for the sixth straight season after taking a 5-1 decision from District of Columbia earlier Friday. The Bears, who improve to 11-0 this season will take on the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Queens College and LIU Post.
The Bears were only up 2-1 after doubles play, with Antonella Lopez and Paulina Velasquez facing no contest due to an insufficient lineup from the Firebirds. The duo of Melanie Benyadi and Lena Dimmer at second doubles turned away their counterparts Paula Avellan and Estefanie Castrillon with an 8-2 decision to hold a 2-0 advantage. The top flight is where UDC grabbed their lone point however, when Dominika Hadnadova aand Alena Skobkina won 8-6 over Gabriela Siembab and Karolina Pondusova.
Heading into singles play, the Blue and Gold quickly earned another point at No. 6 due to lack of competition for Lopez on the other side of the net. With a 3-1 lead, all the Bears needed were two more points to close out the match and clinch a spot in the finals. At fifth singles, Velasquez managed to do just that with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Arielle Ward and Benyadi took back-to-back decisions from her opponent at the fourth flight to clinch.
The victory improves the team to their eleventh straight victory and sixth consecutive season appearing in the championship match. The finals are slated to begin at noon on Saturday, October 29.
