West Babylon, N.Y. - Today Long Island University announced the unification of its LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn athletic departments into a single Division I athletic program. LIU Post, one of the charter members of the East Coast Conference, will conclude its membership in the league at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season.
"The East Coast Conference wishes LIU Post well as they finalize their plans to create one NCAA Division I athletic program between their two campuses," said ECC Commissioner, Dr. Robert Dranoff. "LIU Post athletics has enjoyed great success on both a conference and national level and has been an important member of this league."
Dranoff also added, "When they were known as C.W. Post they were charter members of the newly formed New York Collegiate Athletic Conference which later became the East Coast Conference. Former Athletic Director and ECC Hall of Fame inductee, Vinnie Salamone, and many of the current and former Post coaches, administrators, and student-athletes made great contributions to the NYCAC and ECC."
Dranoff finished his statement by saying, "The timing of this announced change is of course not ideal for the student-athletes involved or for our conference members. We will continue to explore all options for new members and growth and will continue to be a successful Division II conference. The ECC is a conference with a strong reputation and rich history of successful athletic programs and outstanding student-athletes who have achieved great things in the classroom, the community, and in sports. We are proud of the work being done by all our administrators, coaches and team members and look forward to continuing to provide excellent ECC and NCAA Division II experiences for everyone. We are excited with our future and look forward to continued great things for all our ECC stakeholders."
The ECC will continue to announce updates as LIU Post moves closer to the conclusion of its membership in the conference.
