Five ECC Tennis Teams Heading to NCAA Tournament

Indianapolis – The 2012 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship fields were announced on Tuesday evening with five East Coast Conference teams making the cut. Three men’s teams, University of the District of Columbia, NYIT, and Queens, as well as UDC’s and Queens’ women’s teams, will now battle for a National Championship.

Men’s Tennis

On the men’s side, the ECC took three out of the seven spots in the East Region bracket. ECC Champion Queens is the top seeded conference squad, earning the No. 2 seed. The Knights, who are ranked No. 24 in the nation in the latest Campbell’s/ITA National Rankings, will take on No. 7 seed Southern New Hampshire.

ECC Finalist UDC follows with the No. 3 seed and will take on conference foe and first time NCAA participant, NYIT. The Bears earned the No. 6 seed in their second season of existence after posting an 11-11 mark. This marks the fourth time the teams will have squared off this season, with the Firebirds coming away victorious the previous three matchups.

The East Region preliminary rounds are split up into two sites, with one at Merrimack and one at Southern New Hampshire. All three ECC squads will be in action at Southern New Hampshire beginning on April 30. The winners of the first round matches will advance to the second round on May 1.

Merrimack will take on Bentley at the other preliminary site, with the winner advancing to take on No. 1 seed Concordia.

Women’s Tennis

In the women’s bracket, Queens and ECC Champion UDC make the field. The Knights grabbed the No. 1 seed after posting a perfect 17-0 record this season (due to ineligible player, Queens did not qualify for ECC Championship). The Knights receive a first round bye and will take on the winner of the No. 4 – No. 5 matchup between Concordia and Stonehill. That matchup will be at the preliminary site hosted by Stonehill on May 1.

UDC continued a season of firsts, by making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The bid comes on the heels of their ECC title, also a program first. With a 15-3 record, the Firebirds grabbed the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 6 seed Adelphi. UDC was placed in the preliminary round hosted by Southern New Hampshire and will play on April 28. If the Firebirds win, they will advance to take on the winner of the No. 2 Southern New Hampshire vs. No. 7 Chestnut Hill matchup on April 29.
