Five ECC Squads Selected to Men’s and Women’s NCAA Tennis Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. – Three men’s tennis teams and two women’s tennis teams from the East Coast Conference have been selected to participate in the 2013 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday evening.

In the men’s bracket, New York Institute of Technology is the highest seeded ECC school, coming in at No. 2. The Bears, 14-8 on the season, earned the automatic berth in to the field by defeating University of the District of Columbia, 5-0, to capture the first ever ECC Championship in program history. In their second straight NCAA appearance, NYIT will travel to Merrimack College and take on No. 7 seed Southern New Hampshire (14-9) in the first round. On the other half of the East Region 2 bracket is No. 3 Merrimack and No. 6 Chestnut Hill.

In the East Region 1 bracket, two ECC squads face off in the first round with a date in the second round against top seed Concordia on the line. District of Columbia (11-4) takes the No. 4 seed and travels to Flushing, N.Y. to take on familiar ECC foe, Queens College (11-5), who received the No. 5 seed. The two schools previously matched up on April 6 this season, with UDC coming away with a 6-3 victory.

In the women’s bracket, ECC Champion, NYIT (22-3) is the top seed in the region and will travel to Stonehill College for the East Region 1 bracket. The Bears will receive a first round bye and will face the winner of No. 4 Stonehill and No. 5 Chestnut Hill.

Queens College(16-2), who has advanced to the Sweet 16 three consecutive years, is the No. 3 seed and host of the East Region 2 bracket. The Knights will have a first round matchup with No. 6 seed Goldey Beacom (13-5). Other teams in the East Region 2 bracket include No. 2 Concordia and No. 7 Southern New Hampshire.
