Flushing, N.Y. - For the fourth season in a row, the Queens College men's tennis team will be playing in the finals of the East Coast Conference (ECC) Men's Tennis Championship, as the Knights rolled past the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-0, in the semifinals at the QC Tennis Center on Friday.
Queens (13-5) will take on rival NYIT (11-4) in the finals on Saturday at noon at the QC Tennis Center. It will be the fourth straight ECC title match featuring the Knights and Bears.
The Knights made quick work of the opposing Spartans in their semifinal contest. Queens quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play before notching the first two singles wins to take the 5-0 victory.
Senior Sharvill Nawghre, who was named ECC Player of the Year on Thursday, teamed up with fellow all-conference member Roman Laga for an easy 8-0 win at top doubles to set the tone early. Sophomore Cosme Jubera and junior Jui Mao followed suit with an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles, and juniors Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win in the third spot.
The Knights kept the momentum rolling into singles play, quickly putting the match away. Mendez took No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win, and Jubera added a 6-1, 6-0 win in the fifth position, as Queens claimed the 5-0 victory.
NYIT has won each of the last three ECC title matches against Queens, including a 5-3 victory in last season's championship. The Knights have other plans this season, especially after dominating the Bears in an 8-1 win earlier this season, snapping NYIT's 29-match ECC win streak.
