Brookville, N.Y. – Host institution, LIU Post's cross country teams swept the 2013 ECC Championships on Sunday, October 27. This marks the fifth straight year the Pioneers men's team has been crowned champions, while the women's team captures their second title in three years.
In the first race of the day, LIU Post women's team had two All-Conference runners in senior, Jennifer McLaughlin, and sophomore, Elizabeth Stirling. Stirling was the first Pioneer across the finish line, posting a time of 18:44.65 to place eight overall. Alexa Montegari (25th), Angelica Price (26th) and Jessica Wilking (30th) were the other runners to score for LIU Post, leading to a team total of 44 that was four points better than runner up, St. Thomas Aquinas.
Roberts Wesleyan, which had 12 runners finish in the top 24 and six All-Conference runners, and Daemen with two All-Conference runners, would have finished in the top two spots in the standings. However, the two schools were ineligible to win the conference championship or place in the standings due to still being in the transition process to become full NCAA Division II members.
In the men's race, the Pioneers also came out on top with 44 points after placing five runners in the top 21 finishers. Two of their runners earned All-Conference spots. Joseph Lasher was first across the line for LIU Post with a second place finish in a time of 25:28.62. Matthew O'Keefe was the other All-Conference runner for the Pioneers with a 14th place showing in a time of 26:28.25.
As with the women's race, Roberts Wesleyan would have taken home the top spot if they had been eligible. The Redhawks had six of the top 18 finishers and had four All-Conference runners. Daemen also posted a good showing in their first ECC Championship race, as the Wildcats would have finished in third place if eligible.
Despite being ineligible to win the conference championship, Roberts Wesleyan's Co-Head Coaches Andrew and Jennifer Dorr, were named the ECC Coaches of the Year for both genders after leading the Redhawks to a first place finish in each race.
Gladys Kimutai of NYIT was named the Female Runner of the Year after capturing a first place finish. Kimutai, a junior, finally won the ECC Championship race after finishing in second place in each of her first two years. She also shattered the LIU Post 5K course record by nearly a minute, crossing the finish line in a time of 17:39.37. The record fell for the third straight ECC Championship after Rachel Prutsman of Roberts Wesleyan had bested the previous mark in 2012.
Rachel Hutchinson of Roberts Wesleyan finished fifth to earn Female Rookie of the Year honors. Hutchinson finished with a time of 18:27.94.
Enock Bor of the Roberts Wesleyan earned Male Runner of the Year honors as he led all finishers in covering the 8K course in 25:13.80. Bor's time was also a course record.
Matthew Cregan of Daemen College was named the Male Rookie of the Year, finishing 10th overall with a time of 26:23.34.
